What you will do
You will support the maintenance and optimisation of a water quality modelling chain used to underpin integrated water policy. The chain consists of several models covering nutrient emissions, ecological quality, and hydromorphological aspects. Several of these models are written in Python, with pre- and post-processing scripts in both Python and R.
Your tasks include:
- Screening and optimising model code: profiling and potentially speeding up computation time, reducing dependencies, rationalising functions and parameters, merging functions into modules
- Analysing data flows and designing an optimised data model based on your findings
- Participating in one or more weekly calls with the modelling team to follow up on progress, clarify questions, and plan upcoming tasks
What we are looking for
- Demonstrable experience in designing data models
- At least 3 years of experience optimising and tuning databases and queries
- At least 3 years of experience analysing data flows
- Demonstrable experience with scripting in Python and R
- At least 3 years of experience with the technologies in question or similar technologies
- Fluent in Dutch (CEFR level C2)
- Experience with databases (SQL, Oracle) is a strong advantage
- Experience with reporting is a strong advantage
- Experience with scripting (Shell, Perl, Python) is a strong advantage
- Experience with optimal use of databases such as Postgres is a plus
The setting
This assignment runs from December 2026 to the end of April 2027. Interviews are planned for mid-November 2026.
You will work partly on-site at the client's offices in East Flanders, between 8:30 and 17:00 (to be agreed with the team). Hybrid working is possible and can be arranged with the team.
The client provides the necessary licences, software and network access. Office 365 software can be made available without a licence, or LibreOffice can be provided as an alternative.
The working language is Dutch.
